Other necessary skills include the ability to operate independently as well as collaboratively. As a police officer, you must prioritise the needs of your team and lead by example. As a police officer, you may frequently encounter a variety of difficulties and situations that require self-assurance and tenacity. Your professional and composed demeanour in a variety of situations is expected by the general public. Police officers must possess a solid awareness of the law, their own protocols, and community standards. Finally, police personnel must be capable of handling challenging situations, issues facing the community, and criminal cases.”

The difference between the two forces is that the City of London Police is responsible for the very centre of London known as the ‘Square Mile’ which is approximately 1.1 miles square. Although, there are only 9,400 residents, each day nearly 500,000 commuters visit the city for work purposes. The area also attracts 1000s of tourist each day.
The Metropolitan Police covers the remainder of London, with a much larger area of 609 square miles. The reason why there are two police forces serving London can be traced back in history, when London was policed by two different sheriffs for Day and Night City watch. This eventually evolved into the two separate police services which serve London today.

Q1: How much do City of London Police Officers earn?
City of London police officers earn on average £37,000 plus per annum however for a new officer starting their probationary period and in training, this will less. Once you have completed your training and probationary period, your salary will increase. This will continue to increase in increments throughout your career and further with any promotions or specialist roles.
Q2: Who is the head of City of London Police?
Unlike other home office police services, who’s top rank is Chief Constable, the City of London Police head officer is known as Commissioner. The current commissioner is Ian Dyson.
Ian Dyson joined the Met Police in 1983, holding various positions for 25 years. After serving in the Met since 1983, Ian joined Surrey Police as Assistant Chief Constable in 2008. He stayed there for two years when he then joined the City of London Police in 2010. During his time with the City of London Police he fronted the national implementation of the 101 non-emergency number.
Ian steadily moved up the ranks and within 6 years of being with City of London Police reaching the pinnacle of Commissioner in 2016, and still holds the post today.
Q3: Who pays for the City of London Police?
City of London Police Force are partly funded by the City of London Corporation and is the national leading force for investigating fraud, including the growth in online fraud. This is partly due to the location with only 9,000 residents, there is very little domestic crime. However, because of the number of companies and organisations within ‘the square mile’, there are a large number of fraud cases to deal with.
Q4: How do you answer ‘Tell me about yourself’ in a police interview?
A common error usually made by most people is that they focus on their family, children, hobbies or home life. Whilst you may have some interesting facts about your personal life you should either avoid these, unless specifically asked, or keep them very brief. Try to answer this type of question based around your own personal achievements, educational background and ongoing studies. It is good to say that you are motivated or enthusiastic but you MUST ensure that you provide examples or scenarios where this has been proven. It is also vital that you ensure that you include in your response where you match the competencies you are being assessed against.
