“Police officers must be able to communicate effectively in order to reach out to individuals, address their problems, and gather evidence in the form of testimonies and records. Every interaction between an officer, a perpetrator or victim requires a particular communication style, but officers must always follow departmental guidelines. You must be able to operate well both independently and as a part of a team. While on the job, police officers are expected to set a good example and put the needs of the team ahead of their own. To be a great police officer, you must be able to overcome challenges that test your patience and determination. Police personnel must maintain public trust by always acting professionally. Law enforcement officers must be knowledgeable about not just the code of conduct, but also police procedures and ethical guidelines. Police Officers are in charge of a wide range of activities, including responding to public complaints and conducting thorough investigations into criminal behaviour.”

The Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall police is Shaun Sawyer. Having worked for the MET Police for a number of years in specialist operations such as counter-terrorism and head of covert operations. Shaun was appointed Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall in February 2013 and still holds the post today.

As a new police officer recruit with Devon and Cornwall Police you will follow a 2 to 3 year training plan. The length of time depends on whether you join with or without a degree.
