Officers must follow the principles, standards, and operational procedures of the police force while engaging with suspects, witnesses, and victims. It is important to be able to operate both independently and as part of a team. If you want to be a successful police officer, you must put the welfare of your community first and set a good example for the people you serve. Because of the nature of the job, police officers must be self-assured and capable of quickly recovering from setbacks. Many people look up to you because they know they can rely on your expertise and calm guidance through challenging times. Officers must be familiar with the area they are serving as well as the safety measures in place. To solve crimes, complicated situations, and community concerns, officers must be able to collaborate as well as think independently.”

Yes! I Want To Pass My Interview!MET POLICE: Can I join the police with no qualifications?
Currently, you cannot join the police without any prior qualifications. You would be required to have at least 2 A levels or equivalent to join degree apprenticeship scheme. Some forces have entry routes for police specials and PCSOs as long as a certain-criteria is met. For example, you must have served for at least 18 months in the role, and must have independent patrol status (IPS) to be eligible.
It may also be possible to be considered if you have served in the armed forces under a similar status to the role of police officer and have completed the minimum service as well as having exemplary references.
In other rare circumstances you could be considered if you have skills that are deemed to be transferable to the role of a police officer.
METROPOLITAN Police Officer – Your Questions Answered!
Q1: Do you have to live in London to join the Met Police?
To apply via the DHEP and PCDA routes you will need to adhere to the London residency criteria. To be eligible to apply you would need to have lived or studied in three of the last six years from the point of your application. This is covered by the areas set out in the MPS policing boundaries. This only applies to police officers and not police staff, PCSOs, Special Constables and DC degree holder applicants.
Q2: How much does a Met police officer earn?
The starting salary as a new recruit joining via the PCDA scheme will start on a salary of £30,000 which includes the London allowance. This will increase to £33,000 after your probationary period. Over the coming 7 years this will increase up to £48,000 per annum. If you join via the DHEP, your starting salary will be slightly higher £31,000. This will increase to £33,000 after the completion of your probationary period. Again after 7 years as a PC you can expect to earn up to £48,000 including allowances.
Q3: What area does the Met police cover?
The Met police cover an area of 609 square miles covering Greater London but excluding the City of London area known as the square mile. The area itself has a population of 9,000,000 of extremely diverse communities. The met police have over 43,000 employees which includes 32,493 police officers, 1,858 police specials, and over 1,500 PCSOs. In terms of environment the majority of area, is built up urban areas with multiple policing challenges.
