Q1. Why do you want to become a police officer?

SUGGESTED ANSWER:

“I’d like to work for South Wales Police Service for a variety of reasons. Working with this team will allow me to put my skills to use in ways that benefit the area as a whole and the inhabitants’ quality of life. My ultimate career objective has always been to join South Wales police and work as a police officer. If given the opportunity, I am certain that I can develop as a person and as an employee in this fast-paced, high-stakes workplace if given the opportunity. In my experience, the most enjoyable and productive periods of my professional life have been those in which I have pushed myself to expand my knowledge and skills, I feel like this role would be an excellent chance to do this. I’ve always wanted to be a police officer because I am determined, committed, and capable of managing the duties that come with the position. Two of the most compelling aspects of this line of work are the regular chances to take on new initiatives and tasks, as well as the opportunity to make South Wales a safer environment for all its inhabitants.”

Q2. What skills are needed to be a police officer?

SUGGESTED ANSWER

“To succeed in the profession, a police officer must have excellent communication skills. In order to complete their responsibilities properly, police officers must be able to speak with members of the public, listen to what they have to say, and gather evidence through verbal and written communication. When dealing with criminal suspects, witnesses, and victims, members of the police force must follow the department’s established principles, standards, and operational procedures. Strong abilities to operate well both alone and in groups are essential. Going above and beyond to ensure the safety of people you have sworn to serve and protect is an important component of being an excellent police officer. Because the work is unpredictable, police officers must have trust in their abilities to manage unanticipated difficulties. Citizens know they can rely on and trust you as a police officer. As a result, all officers must act honourably and to the best of their ability in order to assist in the settlement of any concerns brought to their attention. Officers are required to have a detailed awareness of the territory under their command, as well as the measures put in place to ensure the safety of the general population. Police officers must work together as well as individually to properly investigate crimes and respond to community concerns.”

What are the stages of South Wales Police Officer recruitment?

The selection process to join South Wales Police as a police officer is deliberately challenging to ensure only the right candidates are chosen. Being a police officer requires a certain set of skills and qualities that not everyone possesses, therefore is not an ideal career for everyone.

Stage 1 – Online Application: You will be required to complete an online application form which will include a number eligibility questions. These will need to be answered honestly, if any of the eligibility questions are answered incorrectly you will not continue in the process. We do recommend you check the eligibility criteria before applying.

Stage 2 – Behavioural Style Questionnaire: This part of the process will require you to answer a number of questions which assess whether you demonstrate the correct behaviours and qualities to fulfil the role competently.

Stage 3 – Situational Judgement Exercise: This exercise will present you with a scenario which is based around the role of a police officer and your task is to decide which of the answers is the best solution to the scenario.

Stage 4 – Online Assessment Process: This next stage consists of a number of online exercises and interview. The OAP consists of the following:

  • Competency-based interview
  • Written exercise
  • Briefing exercise

All of these tests can be taken at different times, but if one of the stages is started, it must be completed in the same session.

Stage 5 – Final/In-force interview: The next stage is the final interview. This will be structured differently to the OAP interview. Although it will include competency questions, it will also assess your motivations for wanting to become a police officer. We recommend when preparing for this interview you research South Wales Police; it’s mission and objectives, but also South Wales as a community and its challenges.

Stage 6 – Fitness and Medical Assessment: You will be required to undergo a fitness assessment which will include a multi-stage fitness test. You will also be required to undergo a medical, where your sight, hearing and BMI will be checked.

Stage 7 – Vetting, references and drug testing: The final stage will include the vetting and your references will be contacted. You will also have to undergo a substance misuse test and biometric vetting.

Once all of the above stages are complete and you are successful, you will receive a formal offer of employment which you will need to confirm. You will be then sent an intake date when you will start your training and the first stage of your exciting and rewarding new career.

SOUTH WALES POLICE Officer – Your Questions Answered!

Q1: How many police officers are in South Wales Police?

South Wales Police has almost 3,000 serving police officers, and large numbers of PCSOs and special constables, making them the largest police service in Wales. Spanning 812 square miles and with a population of 1,300,000 accounting for over 40% of the country’s population. In regards to terrain South Wales has a diverse mixture of urban, coastal and rural areas each with their own unique policing challenges.

Q2: Is there a height requirement to become a police officer?

There is no minimum or maximum height requirement preventing people from becoming a police officer in the UK.

Q3: How do I become a police officer in South Wales?

To be eligible to apply to become a police officer with South Wales police you will need to either have a level 3 qualification in two subjects to be able to apply via the PCDA route, or hold a degree in any subject which you can use to qualify for DHEP programme. You can also study for a degree under the Pre-join degree scheme. This allows you to first study for the degree and then apply once you have completed the degree.

Alternately, some forces do have entrance routes for serving PCSOs and special constables, if certain conditions are met. But please check with your force first.

It is worth noting that all of these routes are subject to the successful completion of the South Wales Police selection process to become a Police Officer.

Q4: How long is South Wales police training?

The initial South Wales Police Officer training will last for six months and will be mixture of classroom and on-the-job training.

This will not interfere with your degree course as you will still also follow the curriculum for the 3 years under the PCDA scheme, or 2 years if you joined under the degree holder route.
